Maria Lionza
1.5mX1.5m Clay, Acrylic, Gold Leaf on Canvas

Maria Lionza is a Venezuelan Goddess, created from the mix of African, Indigenous and Catholic beliefs. She is love, harmony and peace. This piece is a reimagination of what she represents.
From her womb she pulls a healing energy that safeguards the rainforest covered sierras.
Her white feather earring is gifted from one of the 5 white eagles that settled to form the snow covered peaks of the Andes.
The ammonite earring is a sign of her immortal age.
The Heliconia around her neck demonstrates vitality and abundance.
The wood-cut prints on her right arm are traditional indigenous custom.
The pattern on her top is inspired by artist - Carlos Cruz-Diez who covered the Caracas airport in a culturally impactful mosaic of this pattern. This is an homage to all who have left the country but continue to be protected by its spirit.
Every part of this piece is intentionally and fiercely Venezuelan.
